When the heat is blazing, there’s only one great thing to beat it undoubtedly. Shed the clothes, slip into a swimsuit, slather on some sunscreen and take the plunge in the inviting waters of a cool swimming pool!

Delhi has a good selection of swimming pools , both private and DDA-run, that becomes quite a rage when the Sun God decides to work overtime. Pools are open until late October, till the weather is hot and balmy; however, they find few takers during the bone-chilling winter months also.

Siri Fort Sports Complex Pool

What’s the pool like? Clean, well-maintained, Olympic-sized. Closed November-March.

To swim: Must be a member or a temporary member. Temporary memberships can be applied for in person on the final day of each month at 6.30 a.m. at the front gate. Bring identification, proof of address — and snacks and water. A monthly swimming pass is 3,000 rupees (about $50), on top of membership charges.

Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Complex (known as Talkatora)

What’s the pool like? The complex has Olympic-sized swimming and diving pools, and is open year round. Lifeguards and swim coaches are available. A top choice for lane swimmers.

To swim:  The pool is open to members and non-members. Gaining a membership form is relatively easy: Application forms are available all working days from mid-March to September end between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Gulmohar Park Club

What’s the pool like? It’s small, clean, quiet and particularly shallow at one end. It’s often empty except in the after-school hours, when the waters swell with schoolchildren. Early morning and late-night swims are particularly blissful and solitary. But its popularity with very young swimmers means you spend much time wondering about the urine:water ratio.

To swim: Non-members can pay 175 rupees to swim. The pool is closed November to March, and in summer is open from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., and reopens from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Amatrra Spa, Ashok Hotel

What’s the pool like? It is exactly what you might expect of a five-star hotel: pool lights, a Jacuzzi, a separate kids’ space, a nearby grassy lawn.

To swim: Amatrra’s pool is one of the few hotel pools open to non-guests. Visitors can pay 3,165 rupees for a full day’s access. It’s open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Park Hotel

What’s the pool like? There are sunbeds and cabanas, but perhaps the greatest drawcard is the designer Aqua pool bar, making it the best option if you like your swim with a side of gin.

To swim: Non hotel guests can pay 1,200 rupees for a full day’s access to the pool.

Khazan Singh Academy

One of the reputed swimming pools in south Delhi is the Khazan Singh Academy.

What’s the pool like? With at least four coaches and a couple of lifeguards, this swimming pool is well maintained and is quite a popular stop for moms, dads and their kids. You can choose any time, from morning till 9 in the night.

To Swim: You are expected to shell out Rs 1300 for the first month and Rs 700, from the second month.

Nelson Health Club, Samrat Hotel

If you seek pool pleasure in a five-star ambience, pick Nelson Health Club in Samrat Hotel.

What’s the pool like?  Well-maintained and high on the hygiene factor, this pool remains open through the day from 7.30 am to 8 pm. Though the pool laps will make you cooler by the hour, the high wallet factor can singe you where it hurts the most.

To Swim: If you are willing to loosen your purse strings for reputation, privacy and star comfort , you won’t feel too short changed with their per-day rates of Rs 450 (for adults) and Rs 350 (children). The benefits last till late October.

What’s the pool like?   The residents of Greater Kailash do not need to look around elsewhere to go swimming as Pacific Swimming and Sports Complex providing training which is offered by seasoned coaches.

To Swim: Starts from Rs 2,500 per month to Rs 4,000 per month (for learners).

What’s the pool like?   Located in the heart of the national capital, Delhi Public School in RK Puram keeps its swimming facilities open for public even if the school remains shut for vacations and other public holidays. Counted among the oldest pools in the city, the school offers clean and hygienic swimming experience and coaching is also available for a group of ten or more.
