Since the last two Sundays, the municipal authorities have not allowed the vendors to sell books at the Sunday market at Daryaganj.

The sellers now fear that they may not be allowed to return at all.

The vendors have been informed that this is a part of the ongoing beautification drive for the three-day Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit to be held in Delhi, starting January 24.

But there is a chance that not all vendors might come back once the ASEAN Summit is over. According to Ruchika Katyal, deputy commissioner, City-Sadar Paharganj Zone of North Municipal Corporation the agency will only allow authorised booksellers on the permitted areas.

Every Sunday the street sees more than 250 booksellers put up their stalls on the pavement along Netaji Subhash Marg and Asaf Ali Road starting from Daryaganj-Faiz Bazar crossing to Delite Cinema. The market is known for rare books being available at dirt cheap prices since 1964.

Let us keep our fingers crossed and hope our favourite book market is not uprooted along with our childhood memories!
