Every year tons of people stand outside the CIMA Gallery in Kolkata to check out the annual Art Mela. In fact, the mela is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with its 11th edition in Delhi.
On offer, this year will be paintings by 80 different artists including established names like Ganesh Pyne, Paresh Maity etc. Moreover, all the paintings will be sold for anywhere between INR 3,000 and INR 75,000 and more. And that’s not all collectors from across Delhi will get to choose from. The art mela will also be showcasing vernacular works such as Patachitra, Madhubani.
The idea behind the art mela has its roots in the Nandan Mela. Organised each year in Shantiniketan, to commemorate Nandalal Bose’s birth anniversary, the art mela over time became a momentous occasion. In fact, in the early days people, would buy paintings for as little as INR 10 and INR 100.
