Know-It-All In 30 Second
A few students are seeking a ban on the Virgin-tree puja tradition as they say it represents male desperation, aggression and misogynistic attitude towards women. The truth is that it is commemorated to spread awareness about the sexually transmitted disease, HIV and sex education among the student. There are some people who are in favor of it while some are protesting against the sudden ban.
What’s The Virgin-Tree Legacy?
Okay so, the Virgin Tree has been existing in Hindu college since forever and has been a symbol of love, romance and so it’s believed that it brings good luck to those seeking dates and well, some action as well. It is a very old tradition and over the years it has become an identity and culture of our college. It was started in the1953.
The students have a diety that goes by the name ‘Damdama Bai’ and every year an actor is chosen by the hostel students. The tree is decorated with condom balloons, posters and other stuff every year and is made Puja ready and it worked. People got dates, proposals and shared numbers under the Virgin-Tree.
Why Is It getting Banned?
A student member of the Internal complaint Committee (against sexual harassment) of Hindu College claimed the Aarti song has lewd lyrics that describe female physique in an objectionable manner. While some say the objection is nothing but an attempt to politicize the whole issue. People are seeking a ban on the tradition as they say it represents male desperation, aggression and misogynistic attitude towards women.
