In the past, we’ve talked a lot about the history of places in Delhi. In fact, Khan Market is one of those and it has a rich history, you probably didn’t know about!

Established in 1951, Khan Market was named after Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan – brother of Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan. It has been constantly named as one of the costliest high-end markets in the world.

It was built in a U-shape with a capacity for 154 shops and 74 flats. Moreover, it was initially built as a seed land for immigrants from the North Western Frontier Province after partition.

Boasting of shops that were predominantly set up by migrants – the first shop owners named it after Khan. Since he helped them settle down in their new lives.

So, even until the 1980’s, the market’s first floors were home to the shop owners. In fact, the market was only supposed to have neighbourhood grocery shops and middle-class shops in the beginning.

Yet, with the passage of time, it mainly catered to upmarket clients from Golf Links and nearby societies.

And as their business grew, many shop owners shifted out of their houses in Khan Market.

Today

It is one of the most expensive commercial real estate locations in the city. Moreover, in 2011, Cushman & Wakefield ranked Khan Market as the world’s 21st most expensive shopping market in the world.

Now, we must confess that even we didn’t Khan Market was essentially a migrant colony. How about you?
