In an attempt to save energy and preserve our natural resources, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has decided to set up biogas plants in all Gurudwara complexes in Delhi and use this clean energy to fire up their kitchen stoves.

This initiative has been taken by the committee to address issues like the problem of waste. Kitchen waste, vegetables, fruit peels, and leftover langar food will be converted into clean fuel daily in these biogas plants.

At present, DSGMC is using  Piped Natural Gas (PNG) from IGL for cooking langars in all 10 historic gurudwaras in Delhi.

The move to go for biogas plants is aimed at reducing carbon footprints, cutting fuel cost and making the religious shrine environment-friendly.

The biogas plants will be set up at Delhi’s Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib that generate largest biodegradable waste among all historic gurdwaras in the national capital.

The community kitchen in these gurdwaras serves food to around 30,000 visiting devotees every day.to manage four quintals of leftover food, vegetables, rotten fruits, and kitchen waste on a daily basis.

These plants at both the gurdwaras are expected to be operational by October 2018.

The move comes days after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in Amritsar announced its decision to set up a biogas plant at the Golden Temple kitchen that caters to a huge volume of devotees every day.
