So, before we kick off the brief history of CP, here’s a fun fact. The Indian Government once had plans on building the New Delhi Railway Station under the Central Park. Today it houses the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station.
Before: CP Was Once A Ridge
Until the plans to build a commercial market came into existence, CP was once a ridge. In fact, it was also a popular partridge hunting zone for residents of Kashmere Gate and nearby regions.
Moreover, the people who lived in the erstwhile ridge area had been displaced once the plans to construct a commercial market were put in place.
The Plan: Ideated And Executed
Additionally, the plans to build a commercial centre was ideated when the Indian capital was being shifted to Delhi. Which, by the way, took a turn for the better when Britishers created the market modelled after Royal Crescent in Bath, England.
However, while the Royal Crescent was a semi-circular, three-storeyed building, CP was built to only house two floors across a circular structure. Eventually, the market had two concentric circles – today’s inner and middle circle.
Finally, the construction started in 1929 and finished in 1930’s.
Today: World’s 10th Most Expensive Office Location
Even until last year, CP was ranked as the 10th most expensive office location in the world. Today, it is also the shopping hub of Delhi with dozens of brands constantly opening new shops!
So, it took us a little less than 2 minutes to check out this brief history on CP. How about you?
