Legal Age To Drink In Delhi May Be Lowered, Delhi HC To Decide

Legal Age To Drink In Delhi

Recently, Delhi HC sought a response from Delhi Government on a PIL seeking to lower legal age to drink in Delhi. In fact, the PIL argued that the legal age to drink is discriminatory as it is lower in other states!

Currently, residents of Delhi who are or above 25 can legally drink or buy liquor. Whereas in UTs and states like Goa and Rajasthan the legal age to drink is 21 & 18, respectively.

Moreover, the PIL further argued that the many residents of Delhi travel to other states just to consume alcohol. So, while the excise department will provide the Delhi Govt’s response, the data may take time to collect.

Especially, since the PIL stated that 67% of people between 18-25 purchased alcohol without showing proof of age.

However, the decision will only be disclosed later this year. As the next hearing regarding the case is October 9.
