Delhi’s imaginative history is often spoken about in terms of the 7 cities. So, the cities were basically fortified settlements established by various rulers between 11th & 17th centuries!
In fact, the sixth out of the seven cities was Purana Qila. You see it every day, but do you really know its history & historical significance?
So, the thing to remember about Purana Qila is that it history runs deep. Pun not intended & pun intended! That’s right guys!
Historians believe that if they excavate enough, they might find the remains of a historical city buried deep under the ground of Purana Qila.
Moreover, walls and structures within (stepwell & mosque etc) are attributed to Humayun & Sher Shah Suri. Humayun started the construction of Purana Qila in 1533. But that halted after he was deposed by Sher Shah.
However, Humayun recaptured the fort 15 years later only to trip down the stairs of the library and die.
So, after Humayun’s died, the fort was all but forgotten until Edwin Lutyens came to the city. The Brits saw to it that the eastern end of the ceremonial avenue was aligned with the Purana Qila.
Moreover, the Viceroy’s House was built in such a way that overlooked the old fort.
The fort was a living part of the city until 1914 when a village within the fort walls was found incompatible & cleared. Later, the fort became the site of several temporary settlements.
Also, during the second world war, nearly 3,000 Japanese civilians camped here. And after partition, the Qila sheltered thousands who were fleeing Delhi.
Now, the fort is surrounded by a zoo. And while many enjoyed the boat rides here, even the water has vapourised.
