Did you really think Paharganj is only known for its boozy lanes and baggy pants? Think back and imagine the winding lanes, now picture an old library nestled in the corner street! You probably wouldn’t be able to. But that’s the charm of the place, a secret so well kept that even thousands of books were forgotten! So, let us show you into the gates of bibliophile heaven, shall we?
30 Second Window:
- Jackson’s Bookshop in Main Bazaar is one of Delhi’s oldest libraries. Housing over thousands of books all under one roof, the library is probably a personification of heaven!
- With enough shelves stacked with books to make your head spin, you must admit that a visit here is must! But that’s not even the real secret of the place.
- The bookstore’s largest selection of books lie in a long, narrow room tucked inside a nearby alley. It is always locked, for obvious reasons!
- Yet, you can request the owner to open it for you. And he leaves you all by yourself, peacefully, with thousands of his precious books.
- The books found here may have been left by travellers or passed down by generations. In fact, some of the copies may have come from across the border!
- You can find books by Wilbur Smith to John Updike, from Buddha to Aurobindo, from mountaineering literature to poetry anthologies, you will find it all here!
