A decade after the steel sprouts on the AIIMS flyover was installed, civic bodies are now all geared up to dismantle them. In fact, installed during Sheila Dikshit’s term, the steel sprouts were criticised for their so-called aesthetic beauty.
Moreover, the landmark – one of India’s largest site-specific public art installation will be replaced by a water fountain. So, while the fate of the 80 sprouts still hangs by the thread, many officials claim that they will be dismantled by next month.
Additionally, the sprouts represented growth of India as a country and endeavoured to portray Delhi as a ‘world city’. And in the last decade or so, they had become an essential part of the city’s prominent landmarks.
So, regardless of some us actually liking the aesthetic beauty of the installation, they will soon be gone.
